Jura Marble – flooring for high-traffic areas

Jura Marble – flooring for high-traffic areas

Jura Limestone is a popular marbled limestone that has been used for decades around the world as flooring in both private villas and in high-traffic areas – airports, shopping centers, administrative complexes. The stone is quarried in northern Bavaria, Germany. To use the natural material as flooring in areas with high visitor traffic, it is necessary to conduct tests on the following parameters of the stone.

Jura Limestone should be selected exclusively by companies that can provide at least certificates of conducted tests. To establish the quality of Jura Limestone as a flooring material, numerous tests should be conducted.

Tests for Jura Limestone

Determination of density in dry condition (DIN 52102)

The ratio of the substance of the stone to the voids and the volumes with voids.

Determination of hygroscopicity (DIN 52103)

Dry stone absorbs water to a depth of 1 cm in 1 minute.

Hygroscopicity is determined by the formula: (weight in a wet state/weight in a dry state) / the area of contact of the stone.

Abrasion resistance testing using a grinding wheel according to the Böhm method, abrasion testing (DIN 52108)

Wear in volume fractions (cm³) on a 50 cm² grinding surface.

Bending strength test (DIN 52112)

How much can a stone, which is supported on two points, be bent, and how much weight can be placed in the center of the sample before it breaks, as well as how long it will take to break?

Resistance test (DIN 52105)

Pressure should be applied to the stone that is being installed on the pressing plate until the stone cracks.

Testing for slip resistance properties (DIN 51130)

According to DIN 51130, the slip resistance of floor coverings of all types is determined on a "sloped level": the person conducting the test walks back and forth on the test floor covering in special shoes with an upright posture. During this process, the tester leans at an angle from a state of balance until complete loss of balance occurs. Thus, the accepted angle on the surface is marked with a lubricant. The average accepted angle obtained serves as a measure of the slip angle.

The determination of slip properties according to DIN 51130 is carried out in laboratory conditions only for new factory samples of the covering. There is no data on the properties of the tested flooring for daily use. Since in recent years the tests themselves and the methods of conducting them have been improved, quality control of the flooring is carried out not only in the laboratory but also at the site of material application.

Slope angle from 3 to 10° (R9)

R9 – should be used in commercial spaces, on stairs, corridors, halls (of train stations), and guest reception rooms.

The technical specifications are provided for each layer of Jura Limestone extracted from the supplier's quarry.

The most important tests for assessing the quality of Jura Limestone are the abrasion resistance test and the flexural strength test. All tests are conducted under laboratory conditions on selected samples for testing, and the data is compared with other data for different types of stone. The interpretation of individual indicators may vary.

In conclusion, first of all, regarding wear resistance indicators, a visual inspection should also be conducted. This way, a fairly quick result can be obtained covering many characteristics through visual examination, and it can be determined which stone variety has the best characteristics under the same conditions and can withstand the load for several years.
